Beyond Team Building: How GeckoSports Tied a Staff Development Day Back to One WA School’s Values
This WA school principal didn’t want “team building for the sake of team building.” They wanted a day staff would enjoy that also connected clearly back to the school’s values and business plan.
The Challenge
This WA school principal wanted an offsite staff development day that connected genuinely back to the school’s business plan, values and culture — not “team building for the sake of team building.” The concern going in was whether an outside provider could really understand a school environment and link the activities to the school’s broader priorities, rather than delivering a generic program.
What We Did
GeckoSports worked with the school beforehand to understand its values and business plan priorities, then built the day around them. Throughout the offsite session, facilitators kept bringing conversations back to the school’s values and how staff work together, while the leadership team was able to join in alongside everyone else instead of running the day from the front.
The Result
The principal called it “one of the best staff professional development experiences I have seen delivered in a school context,” with activities generating real conversations around communication, leadership, trust and collaboration. Staff didn’t sit through presentations about culture and teamwork — in the principal’s words, “they were actually experiencing it.”
