Not Your Average “Sports” Day: How One WA Primary School Got Its Whole Staff Talking Again
Worried the word “sport” would put nervous staff on the spot, this WA primary school (north of the river) wanted a staff day that felt like a genuine break — not a competition.
The Challenge
This WA primary school wanted a staff development day that gave every staff member a real chance to switch off from the usual demands of school life, with minimal preparation required from the school itself. Some staff were also wary the word “sport” might mean a competitive day that put anyone who didn’t consider themselves sporty on the spot.
What We Did
GeckoSports made the focus clear from the start: participation, teamwork and fun, not competition. Facilitators balanced activity, problem-solving and humour, and encouraged staff without ever pressuring anyone to perform.
The Result
The session “ran seamlessly,” with staff working alongside colleagues they wouldn’t normally spend much time with, and even the quieter members of the team came out of their shells. It became the kind of day staff kept talking and laughing about afterwards.
